Plot summary
Owen Baker is 12, and his parents renovate and resell houses, so lasting friendships are hard to keep. He walks the neighborhood's dogs, and the work earns him a dog of his own: a scruffy Border Terrier he names Hubble. The next morning Owen can understand everything Hubble says, including an order to be taken to his leaders. Hubble is really Canid 3942, sent from the Dog Star Sirius by the powerful Greater Dane to check whether the dogs that landed on Earth thousands of years ago to colonize it have kept to that plan. Among the dogs in his care are Barbara Ann, Wilson, Nelly, and Connie's Bernese Mountain Dog, Shep.
