Maximilian Schell
Biography
Maximilian Schell was an Austrian-born Swiss actor who also worked as a theater director, filmmaker, and musician. Born in Vienna to parents involved in the arts, he began acting in Basel and made his film debut in 1955. His portrayal of a lawyer in Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) brought him the Academy Award for Best Actor. He was later Oscar-nominated for The Man in the Glass Booth (1975) and Julia (1977). Fluent in English and German, he was top billed in Nazi-era themed films and appeared in Topkapi (1964), The Deadly Affair (1967), The Odessa File (1974), and Deep Impact (1998). He made his directing debut with First Love (1970). On television, he won a Golden Globe for Stalin (1992) and earned Emmy nominations for Miss Rose White and Stalin. He played Hamlet on stage and directed plays and operas, and he performed as a pianist and conductor with Claudio Abbado and Leonard Bernstein.

Behind the award
In 1959, Schell played a defense attorney in a live TV production of Judgment at Nuremberg on Playhouse 90. He later won the Academy Award for Best Actor, the first German-speaking actor to do so since World War II.
First role
In 1958 Schell was asked to come to the United States for a Broadway play, Ira Levin's Interlock, in which he took the part of a pianist hoping for a concert career.
Behind the camera
Schell was a writer, producer and director on the documentary Marlene in 1984, which featured Marlene Dietrich. She first agreed to be interviewed and filmed in her apartment, but once filming started she would not let any video of herself appear.
