Plot summary
Ellie Harris needs work, and her older sister Kate gives her a job at Woodlane, the residential home Kate runs. She has trouble settling in and Kate is annoyed when she spends time talking with Alice, one of the residents. Then Kate learns that their mother has had a stroke and decides to go to her, asking Ellie to stay at Woodlane for Christmas because Ellie and their mother do not get along. Most residents spend the holiday with their families, but four remain: Georgia Platts, a former actress and singer, the sisters Heather and Hazel Nightingale, and Donald Vanston, a former judge and recovering alcoholic who plays piano at night. They believe their fees entitle them to do as they please, and their behavior drives other residents away and puts the home's future in doubt.
