Plot summary
Venice, late in the 19th century. Morton Vint is an ambitious editor from America who admires the Romantic poet Jeffrey Aspern and the short life he led. Vint wants the letters Aspern wrote to Juliana Bordereau, the poet's lover and muse. Juliana keeps them in her Venetian palazzo, which is grand but dilapidated, and she is their fierce guardian. Her niece, Miss Tina, leads a quiet life at the palazzo, ruled by her aunt. Vint arrives in the city and presents himself as a man seeking lodgings, then sets out to win Miss Tina over. Mrs Prest is his confidante.
