Plot summary
Hecuba, the queen of Troy, and the city's surviving women await the drawing of lots that will assign each of them to a Greek master. A messenger arrives to announce that the lots are drawn. Cassandra, Hecuba's daughter and a former priestess of Apollo, is chosen for King Agamemnon's bedchamber; she has sworn an oath of virginity to the gods and hides from the Greeks rather than accept it. Andromache, the widow of the slain Hector, means to raise their son Astyanax in the aftermath of the war, but the herald Talthybius brings word that Agamemnon and his brother Menelaus have decreed the boy, the last of Troy's male royalty, must die. Helen of Troy waits to learn whether Menelaus, her former husband, will let her live.

- Michael Cacoyannis filmed Edith Hamilton's translation of Euripides almost unchanged, but cut the gods out entirely, saying the deities were hard to film and make realistic.
- Parts of the press expected a war between Katharine Hepburn, who had attacked the morals of the younger generation, and the radical Vanessa Redgrave, cast as its symbol. On location in Atienza, Spain, the two instead talked painting, politics and acting and both started learning Spanish.
- To play Hecuba, Katharine Hepburn stripped her style back to what she called the bare essentials and took special training that dropped her speaking voice by a full octave, all but erasing her famous twang and East Coast rhythms.
