Plot summary
Maurice Russell was a great actor. His own generation remembers him fondly; younger people do not know his name. He spends his days with Ian, an actor, and Donald, or visiting Valerie, the wife he still loves but no longer lives beside. Ian invites his great-niece Jessie from the provinces to stay with him as a companion, imagining meals and quiet music. Jessie cannot cook, drinks his alcohol and has grand plans for a life she has not begun. Maurice sees in her a way to recover his youth and vigor, and to realize his thoughts of sex. He takes her to the National Gallery to see his favorite painting, the Rokeby Venus, and gives her the name Venus. Maurice is open about his attraction; Jessie permits small indulgences and withdraws them when he presses.
