Plot summary
In the 1930s Winston Churchill sits as a backbench member of Parliament, out of government. The Wall Street crash has cost him a great deal of money, and writing, a life of his ancestor the Duke of Marlborough and a newspaper column, is how he supports his household. Clemmie, his wife, is among the small group of supporters who stand with him, and quarrels over money and the conduct of their son Randolph strain the marriage. Churchill keeps warning Parliament about German rearmament under Hitler, against a policy of appeasement, and members on both sides shout him down as a warmonger.
