Biography

Jack Palance was an American actor known for masculine portrayals in neo-noirs, crime dramas, and westerns. Born in Lattimer Mines, Pennsylvania, he studied method acting under Michael Chekhov before his Broadway debut in 1947 in The Big Two. He got his break when he understudied Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire, eventually taking over the role of Stanley Kowalski. He made his film debut in Elia Kazan's Panic in the Streets (1950). He received three Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor, for Sudden Fear (1952) and Shane (1953), and won for City Slickers (1991). Other notable films included The Big Knife (1955), Attack (1956), Barabbas (1961), Contempt (1963), The Professionals (1966), Monte Walsh (1970), Young Guns (1988), Tango & Cash (1989), and Batman (1989). On television he won an Emmy for Requiem for a Heavyweight (1957), played Dracula in a 1973 TV movie, and hosted Ripley's Believe It or Not! from 1982 to 1986. He died in 2006.

    Around this time, he took the name Walter Jack Palance. He did so because most people found his birth name hard to say, and he based the new surname on the original one.

  6. Behind the camera

    Palance's first turn as a director came on The Greatest Show on Earth, in its 30th and last episode, "You're All Right, Ivy," which starred Buster Keaton. Directing was something he attempted only that once.
