Emile Meyer
Biography
Emile Meyer was an American actor who specialized in tough, aggressive authority figures in 1950s Hollywood movies, largely Westerns and thrillers. He was born in New Orleans, where Elia Kazan spotted him in a stage production and gave him a small uncredited part in Panic in the Streets (1950). Among his notable roles were the cattle baron Rufus Ryker in Shane (1953), Blackboard Jungle (1955), in which he played the belligerent Mr Halloran, Father Dupree in Paths of Glory (1957), which Stanley Kubrick cast him in against type, and the corrupt policeman Harry Kello in Sweet Smell of Success (1957), the part he was most often remembered for. He also worked in television, guesting on The Restless Gun, on Maverick in the 1957 episode Rope of Cards, and on Wagon Train in 1959. His last film was The Legend of Frank Woods (1977). He died in 1987.
