Plot summary
During World War II, a Marine battalion readies an assault on a Japanese-held Pacific island. Lieutenant Colonel Gilfillan orders prisoners taken to reveal Japanese fortifications. Lieutenant Carl A. Anderson, a science teacher before the war, reminds Corporal Stuart Conroy, once his student, of the courage he showed earlier, while Navy corpsman Doc treats Anderson's migraines for months. Anderson leads the landing, and a sudden Japanese rocket attack halts the advance on a ridge of hills. Gilfillan has nine hours before the next assault and tasks Anderson's platoon with taking prisoners to find where the rockets fire from, with Sergeant Johnson, a specialist in Oriental languages and culture, along to help. Anderson chooses his most battle-hardened veterans, among them Pigeon Lane, Slattery, Conroy and Sergeant Zelenko, plus a replacement named Whitney and war correspondent Sergeant Dickerman.
