Plot summary
Eddie Pedak has left prison behind and lives in San Francisco with his wife Kristine and their daughter Kathy, working a steady job. Detective Mike Vido was shot six years earlier during a robbery that was never solved; he saw only the shooter's eyes, but he is certain the gunman was Eddie, and since Eddie's release he has hounded him and cost him job after job. When a shopkeeper is killed in another robbery, Vido is sure Eddie is responsible, though a witness says otherwise, and the arrest costs Eddie his job. Eddie's brother Walter, who runs a criminal gang, offers him fifty thousand dollars for one night's work, and Eddie refuses. Unable to find another job or collect unemployment, Kristine takes work as a waitress.
