Plot summary
David Galt rides with the band of Southern marauders his father, Parson Josiah Galt, leads during the Civil War, together with his brothers Adam and Jacob. Since his wife's death the parson has grown vengeful and sadistic. The Galts raid and loot a Kansas town, and Adam tries to rape a girl there, so David tries to leave. His father has him brought back, accuses him of treason and sentences him to hang. David escapes and rejoins his wife Laura and their son Pauly, and the three settle in Texas under a new name. They live there peacefully, and the war ends.
