Plot summary
Chip, an outspoken boy, and the gunfighter and pimp Sonny Bronston save the drifter Hiram Coburn from a hanging. Coburn is quick with his fists and Sonny with a gun, and the pair trade brawls and shoot-outs along the way. Chip's uncle dies soon after, leaving the boy a house and a stretch of dry land that looks useless, plus a deed and the wish that Coburn take Chip to Westland. The two settle into the house. Franciscus, who serves the town as priest, sheriff and judge, offers to purchase the property, and a stranger follows, tasting bits of clay he buys. Chip turns them all down, which leaves Coburn baffled.
