Martine Carol
Biography
Martine Carol was a French actress who entered the theater after meeting the comedian André Luguet by chance. Born on May 16, 1920, she trained under René Simon and made her stage debut in 1940 in Phedre, billed as Maryse Arley, then took unbilled film parts from 1941. She drew notice in La ferme aux loups (1943), also known as Wolf Farm, and spent the rest of the 1940s as a supporting player, appearing as well at the Theater of the Renaissance. The title role in Dear Caroline (1951) came before the French Revolution epic Caroline Cherie (1953), her first box office hit, which led to further title parts in Lucretia Borgia (1953), Madame du Barry (1954), Nana (1955) and Lola Montès (1955). Later credits included Ten Seconds to Hell (1959) and The Battle of Austerlitz (1960), in which she played Empress Josephine. She died in 1967.
