Plot summary
The spaceship Helios is bound for the Sun with a bomb that carries an artificial intelligence, to be released at the right moment so the flare bends away from the Earth. Left unchecked, the same flare is expected to destroy the planet. Steve Kelso is the astronaut ordered to make the drop, and his father, Admiral "Skeet" Kelso, and his son Mike are on Earth. Arnold Teague calls the danger overstated and works against the mission, since the panic it creates is something he can profit from. Agents working for Teague on Earth clash with the admiral and with Mike.

- Director Richard C. Sarafian had his name removed from Solar Crisis and replaced with the Directors Guild of America alias "Alan Smithee". His son Tedi Sarafian, who rewrote the script, was credited as "Crispan Bolt".
- Solar Crisis opened in Japan in 1990 and underperformed, so the producers extensively recut the film and shot new scenes to secure an American distributor for it.
- Scientist Richard J. Terrile was the film's technical advisor, and he first tried to talk the filmmakers out of sending a crew to the Sun, calling the idea unscientific.
