Neville Brand
Biography
Neville Brand was an American actor who served in the Army during World War II and played gangsters, Western outlaws, cops and other tough characters. He was born in Griswold, Iowa, and grew up in Kewanee, Illinois, then received the Silver Star before training at the American Theatre Wing and the Geller Drama School. After small uncredited parts, his first credited role came in D.O.A. (1949), and he went on to appear in Kansas City Confidential (1952), Stalag 17 (1953) and The Man from the Alamo (1953). Leading roles followed with Riot in Cell Block 11 (1954), for which he was nominated for Best Foreign Actor at the BAFTA Awards. He became familiar as the villain who kills Elvis Presley's character in Love Me Tender (1956). Later credits included Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), That Darn Cat! (1965), Cahill U.S. Marshal (1973), Eaten Alive (1976) and The Ninth Configuration (1980), and he headlined the television series Laredo from 1965 to 1967.

Brand's 1964 Twilight Zone episode "The Encounter," in which he co-starred with George Takei, was pulled from syndication because CBS found its theme of US-Japanese hatred too disturbing.
Early training
After leaving the Army, Brand worked on a 1946 Army Signal Corps film with Charlton Heston. He then moved to Greenwich Village, enrolled at the American Theatre Wing and performed off-Broadway.
First role
Brand's first credited screen part was Chester, a henchman in the 1950 film D.O.A., after uncredited turns in Battleground and Port of New York.
Early training
After his military service, Brand studied at the Geller Drama School in Los Angeles, where he attended on the G.I. Bill.
