Michael Pate
Biography
Michael Pate was an Australian actor, writer, producer, and director who worked steadily as a supporting player in American movies and television. Born in Sydney, he started in radio before moving to the screen in 1946. After appearing in Australian films such as Sons of Matthew (1949) and Bitter Springs (1950), he went to the United States for Thunder on the Hill (1951). He played Flavius in Julius Caesar (1953) and the Apache chief Victorio in Hondo (1953), a role he repeated. Other credits included The Court Jester, Curse of the Undead (1959), and PT 109 (1963). Returning to Australia in 1968, he became a TV producer, won a Penguin Award for Matlock Police, and wrote and produced The Mango Tree (1977). He retired from acting in 2001 and died in 2008.

First role
Pate began his career in Sydney before 1938, when he was 18. He wrote and broadcast for the Australian Broadcasting Commission, working with George Ivan Smith on Youth Speaks.
Behind the camera
That same year, Pate took on adapting, producing, and directing duties for a pair of plays, Dark of the Moon and Bonaventure.
A change of course
Pate was a member of the Australian Army during World War II, serving in the South West Pacific Area. He joined the 1st Australian Army Amenities Entertainment Unit, called "The Islanders", and entertained Australian troops in combat areas.
