Katy Jurado
Biography
Katy Jurado was a Mexican actress whose range of roles helped promote later Mexican actresses in American cinema. Born in 1924, she made her film debut in the Mexican production No matarás in 1943 and spent years playing seductive and villainous women during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, winning an Ariel Award for her supporting work in El Bruto (1953). After filmmaker Budd Boetticher spotted her at a bullfight, she was cast in Bullfighter and the Lady, and her performance in High Noon (1952) as saloon owner Helen Ramírez brought her a Golden Globe. She worked largely in Westerns and earned an Academy Award nomination for Broken Lance (1954), the first Oscar nomination for a Latin American actress. She made her Broadway debut in 1956 in The Best House in Naples, worked in television, and later appeared in One-Eyed Jacks (1961), Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973), Under the Volcano (1984) and The Hi-Lo Country (1998).
