Plot summary
In 1870s New Mexico, Pardon Chato, a half-Apache man, is abused by a sheriff in a bar and shoots him dead in self-defense, then rides out of town. Captain Quincey Whitmore, a former Confederate, puts on his old uniform and gathers a posse of former soldiers and sympathizers to hunt Chato down. Chato keeps ahead of them, firing from a hilltop and scattering their horses, and the men begin to quarrel among themselves. He returns to his hogan, where his wife and son live, and resumes breaking horses. The posse finds the place, rapes his wife and leaves her bound in the open as bait, and Chato turns to his kinsman for help.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Chato's Land (1972)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Making the film caused a controversy over animal cruelty: four horses bought from a Spanish abattoir were slaughtered on set, and the carcasses were filmed being torn apart by vultures that had been placed on them.
- Bronson has only fifteen lines of dialogue in the film, thirteen of them in Apache dialect, which he learned by practicing with tape recordings prepared with help from a Beverly Hills-based Indian florist.
