Plot summary
In May 1897, the solicitor Jonathan Harker travels to Castle Dracula in Transylvania, where the local people fear for him. The count is abrupt, and a photograph of Mina Murray, Harker's fiancée, and of her friend Lucy Westenra draws a strong reaction from him. Dracula holds his brides back from Harker and makes the young man write that he will stay a month. Harker lowers himself down the castle wall, finds Dracula's coffin, and a gypsy servant knocks him out. The Demeter runs aground with only Dracula aboard and its captain dead at the wheel. Lucy, engaged to Arthur Holmwood, begins to ail, and Arthur brings in Dr. Abraham Van Helsing. Dracula comes to the house at Hillingham, puts the household to sleep, and calls Lucy outside, where he bites her neck.

Francis Ford Coppola reused two elements from the 1974 film in his 1992 Bram Stoker's Dracula: that Count Dracula and Vlad the Impaler were the same man, and Dracula's romance with his reincarnated wife, Lucy Westenra in the 1974 movie (Fiona Lewis) and Mina Murray in the 1992 film (Winona Ryder), played by Jack Palance and Gary Oldman respectively.- Marvel Comics' The Tomb of Dracula, which debuted in 1972, gave its Dracula the appearance of Jack Palance before Palance had played the role, because artist Gene Colan was inspired by Palance's performance in the 1968 television movie The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, made with director Dan Curtis.
- When the film was given a theatrical release outside the United States, it included scenes of violence that had not been in the original CBS television version.
