Plot summary
Lena Doyle owns a patch of land near Almira, Oklahoma, and believes the hill on it sits over a broad pool of oil. In 1913 she runs a wildcat drilling outfit there, and her derrick has produced nothing yet. Her only hand is Jimmy, a young Native American. Her estranged father, Cleon Doyle, turns up offering help, and she sends him away. Cleon looks for men to guard the property, but nobody wants to cross Pan Oklahoma Oil & Gas, the strongest company in the region and Almira's chief benefactor. Only Noble Mason, a Spanish-American War veteran, takes the job. Lena distrusts Mason but lets him work, and she keeps refusing her father.
