Plot summary
Benjie fought for the Union in the Civil War, and he still wears the uniform when he walks back into Ironside. The citizens are uneasy about the color of his skin, and an ex-Confederate soldier named Kolby fans that unease into hatred. Neal McMasters, the rancher who raised Benjie, hands him a half-share of the McMasters land, which angers the local Confederate veterans further. Benjie helps a band of starving Indians, and one of them, Robin, becomes his wife. When he needs hands for the round-up and nobody else will work for him, he hires Indians, and the bigots of Ironside set out to shut him down.
