Plot summary
In Neal Mottram's shop, among the art and antiques he deals in, stands a statue of Chuku, an African god. Night after night he carries out rituals before the idol, convinced it will grant him unimaginable wealth and power once he offers up human sacrifice. The offerings he chooses are women, killed by impalement, by slashing, by burning, or frightened to death with a fright mask. Superintendent Bellamy and his detectives, Wall, Russet and Wilson, play cat and mouse with Mottram as the killings go on. Among the people in his life are Dolly Newman, Helena, Sally, Ronnie, Muriel Sharp and his aunt, Louise Nash.
