Plot summary
Buzkashi, the rough sport of Afghanistan, is the pride of Uraz's village, and Uraz rides as one of its masters. His father Tursen, a retired buzkashi player who serves a feudal lord as stable master, has bet on him. When Uraz breaks his leg in a match, Tursen barely speaks to him. The family's honor is damaged, their money gone, and the village carries the shame of the defeat. The break costs Uraz his leg below the knee. He lives by a code of honor, and to restore what his family has lost he must find a way to ride again, in the face of the scorn of others.
