Plot summary

The Army cavalry stationed at Fort Clark, near Brackettville, Texas, keeps Ed Bannon as its chief of scouts. He hopes to help bring peace to the whole region. The Army wants to make a peace with the Apaches and settle them on reservations a long way to the east, in Florida, and the scout's own activities cut against that policy. The Army and the Apaches both stand against him. Toriano, whose father leads the Apaches, comes back after an education among white people in the East. Bannon is suspicious of what the man intends, and the two men distrust each other.
