Plot summary
Riley Wade will not forgive his father, the gunfighter Jacob Wade, for walking out on his mother, and Jacob rides to Red Bluff to try to reconcile with the young man. Riley has nowhere else to go and rides along, and no town will take Jacob in. The two end up at Monolith, Ada Marshall's ranch. Ada, once close to Jacob, is glad to see him and takes them in. Jacob's sight is slowly failing, and he keeps that from his son. On a mustang hunt Riley finds himself drawn to Ada. King Fisher holds a grudge against Jacob and is waiting for his chance.

- Assistant director Gene Nelson recalled tension on the set of The Lonely Man: most of the actors were from the Method school, but Jack Palance was "the macho act", doing push-ups and running before every scene while people waited for him to get ready.
- Columnist Hedda Hopper suggested in April 1955 that Bing Crosby might play the lead in what became The Lonely Man, describing the script by Harry Essex and Robert Smith as an "off beat character study".
