Plot summary
In one story, Melissa Sanders, a sculptor struggling to finish a commission for City Hall, goes to a movie theater to watch His Girl Friday. Scenes from her own life take the place of the comedy on the screen, moments from that same day; she alone sees them while other patrons watch the film. In the other, set in Boston in 1868, three years after the Civil War ended, Dr. Benjamin Ramsey teaches at a university and once worked as a surgeon for the Union Army. He operates on a patient named O'Neill, who dies afterward. Ramsey learns that O'Neill had survived a fractured skull twelve years before, an injury no one could have lived through. His search for answers leads him to the island O'Neill came from, and to Dr. Jeremy Wheaton, who once experimented with tissue regeneration.
