Plot summary

Monte Walsh is an older cowhand who works cattle ranches alongside longtime friend Chet Rollins. Both prefer work that can be done from a horse, splitting their time between the range and occasional trips to town. After learning that the Cross Bar ranch was wiped out by the previous winter, they hire on at the Slash Y, where old boss Cal Brennan is range manager. Monte keeps a long-term relationship with Martine Bernard, a saloon girl suffering from tuberculosis, while Chet is drawn to Mary Eagle, a widowed hardware store owner. Barbed wire and railroads are steadily removing the need for cowboys, and the Slash Y is struggling. When their fellow cowhand Shorty Austin is let go, Monte and Chet have even fewer choices about how to keep their way of life.
