Milburn Stone

Biography

Milburn Stone was an American actor who became familiar to television viewers as Doc Adams in the Western series Gunsmoke. He grew up in Burrton, Kansas, and made his stage debut in a Kansas tent show in 1919, later working in vaudeville and appearing on Broadway in Jayhawker and Around the Corner. In the 1930s he moved to Los Angeles and began a screen career that included the Tailspin Tommy serial and the role of Stephen Douglass in Young Mr. Lincoln (1939). After signing with Universal Pictures in 1943, he became a regular in its features and serials, among them Jungle Woman and Sherlock Holmes Faces Death. He also played Charlton Heston's sidekick in Arrowhead (1953). When Gunsmoke was adapted for television in 1955, he took over the part of Doc Adams from Howard McNear and stayed with the show for 604 episodes through 1975, earning an Emmy Award in 1968.

Stone first appeared on stage in 1919 in a Kansas tent show. In the late 1920s he moved into vaudeville, and by 1930 he was one half of the song-and-dance team Stone and Strain.
