Biography

Claudia Cardinale was an Italian-Tunisian actress who became a leading figure in Italian cinema during a career that lasted more than six decades. Born in La Goulette, Tunisia, she won a beauty competition in 1957 that brought her to Italy and led to film work. After her debut in Goha (1958), she gained notice in Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958) and later starred in Rocco and His Brothers (1960), Girl with a Suitcase (1961), and The Pink Panther (1963). She appeared in Hollywood productions such as The Professionals (1966) and Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). She won David di Donatello awards for The Day of the Owl and A Girl in Australia (1971), and a Nastro d'Argento for Claretta. Later she appeared in Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo (1982). She received a career Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1993.

Did you know?!

  1. Early training

Spotted by film producers, Cardinale was invited to study at Rome's Experimental Cinematography Centre under Tina Lattanzi. She attended briefly, struggling with acting assignments partly because of the Italian language, and after one term she went home.

  2. Languages

Producers thought Cardinale's voice was too hoarse, so she was usually dubbed in her early Italian roles. At that point she still spoke Italian with an accent.

  3. Beyond film

Cardinale's stage career began in 2000, when she took the lead in La Venexiana, a Maurizio Scaparro production adapted by Rene de Ceccatty and staged at Paris's Theatre du Rond-Point.
