Biography

Barbara Stanwyck, an American actress and dancer, began as a Ziegfeld chorus dancer in 1923 and became a Broadway star with her first lead in Burlesque in 1927. She moved into talking pictures in 1929, and Frank Capra cast her in Ladies of Leisure (1930), leading to roles in Night Nurse (1931) and Baby Face (1933). Known for a strong, realistic screen presence, she earned Academy Award nominations for Stella Dallas (1937), Ball of Fire (1941), Double Indemnity (1944), and Sorry, Wrong Number (1948). Other notable films included The Lady Eve (1941), Meet John Doe (1941), Christmas in Connecticut (1945), and The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946). She later turned to television, winning Emmys for The Barbara Stanwyck Show, The Big Valley, and The Thorn Birds, and received an Honorary Oscar in 1982.

    Stanwyck was reportedly considered for Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939), one of many actresses in the running, but she did not receive a screen test.

    Earl Hamner Jr. was rumored to have wanted Stanwyck for Angela Channing on the 1980s soap opera Falcon Crest, but she declined, and Jane Wyman, her friend, got the part. Hamner told Wyman it was only a rumor.

    At David Belasco's suggestion, Stanwyck took the name Barbara Stanwyck. She took Barbara from the title character of the play Barbara Frietchie and Stanwyck from Jane Stanwyck, an actress in that play; both names appeared on a 1906 theater program.

    At age 50, Stanwyck performed a dangerous stunt in Forty Guns in which her character falls from and is dragged by a horse, after the film's professional stuntman refused to do it.
