Plot summary
Melsa Manton is a socialite with a reputation for pranks. Out with her little dogs at three in the morning, she sees Ronnie Belden run from a house for sale and drive away. Inside she finds a diamond brooch and the body of George Lane, a wealthy banker. She runs for help, and when the police arrive the body, her cloak and the brooch are gone. Lieutenant Mike Brent declines to investigate, and Peter Ames, a newspaper editor, writes an editorial mocking her story. Melsa sues him for libel, and she and her friends set out to defend their reputation by finding the murderer themselves.
