Plot summary
Dove Linkhorn and Kitty Tristram meet on a Texas road in the 1930s, each bound for New Orleans. They hitchhike and ride freight trains together. Dove is looking for Hallie Gerard, the woman he has not seen in three years, and he pays no attention when Kitty comes on to him. In a cafe outside New Orleans, Kitty steals from the owner, Teresina Vidaverri. Dove leaves her and settles the matter with Teresina, who gives him a job and a room while he continues his search. He traces Hallie to the Doll House, an elegant bordello in the French Quarter run by a madam named Jo Courtney. Hallie lives there, and Dove asks her to marry him and leave, but she is unwilling to give up the comforts of the house.

- After Laurence Harvey told Capucine she could not act, she sulked for a week; his view was seconded by Joan Perry, widow of studio head Harry Cohn, but producer Charles Feldman kept promoting his live-in girlfriend Capucine. Jane Fonda's insistence on changing dialogue was among the incidents that made the film's director resign.
SPOILER
At the film's end, Bass filmed the same black cat walking over a newspaper headline reporting that the people who ran the bordello were arrested and sentenced to many years in prison, an ending demanded by the Motion Picture Production Code to appease those offended by the film's subject.
