Plot summary
Doug and Helen Stilwin drive across the border into Mexico with their young son Bobby for a vacation at a remote fishing spot on the Baja California coast that Doug knew from his military days. Bobby wanders onto a rotting pier and gets his foot caught between the boards. Doug frees him, but part of the wharf gives way and a wooden piling falls across Doug's leg, pinning him on the beach as the surf begins to rise. Helen's car jack breaks when she tries to lift the piling. Doug sends her for a rope, telling her he has about four hours. At the gas station where the family stopped earlier she finds rope, and a man named Lawson gets into her car. He is an escaped convict, and he comes across Doug's pistol in the glove compartment.
