Plot summary
Jonathan Trumbo, who served as an army lieutenant before deserting, takes a job guiding a wagon train to California during the Gold Rush. When Lily Bishop is accused of cheating during a poker game, farmer Michael Fabian asks her to join the train over Trumbo's strenuous objections. Trumbo loses to her at cards and calls her a cheat, and she promises not to forget the insult. Lily rides off with Booth Pennock, and the ruffian lashes Trumbo with a whip before leaving. She settles in Pharaoh City, where she runs a saloon; the town answers to Pharaoh Coffin, once a slave trader, who stands against California statehood and against law and order. Trumbo reaches the town and wins the saloon from her at cards.
