Plot summary
Joan Gordon has sung in New York nightclubs since she was fifteen. She leaves Eddie Fields, her wealthy boyfriend with a criminal operation, for Don Leslie, but when Don's father learns about Eddie, the engagement ends. Rather than return to Eddie, Joan leaves town, changes her name in Montreal, and sings there until one of Eddie's men recognizes her. She trades places with Emily, the hotel maid who had used Joan's photograph in letters to a North Dakota farmer seeking a mail-order bride, and pays her for his address. Joan travels west to marry Jim Gilson, a farmer she has never met, and take up a life she knows nothing about.
