Plot summary
On holiday in Scotland, Sally Morton learns that the painter Geoffrey Carroll, her lover of two weeks, already has a wife, and she ends the romance. In London he paints his wife's portrait as the Angel of Death and buys poison from the chemist Horace Blagdon under a false name. Two years later Sally is married to him and living in the mansion she inherited in a small town. Geoffrey is a successful painter who has lately found no inspiration, and his daughter Beatrice lives with them. Sally's former fiancé, the lawyer Charles Pennington, brings his client Mrs. Latham and her daughter Cecily to the house; Cecily wants Geoffrey to paint her portrait.

- During the stage run of The Two Mrs. Carrolls, Elisabeth Bergner mentored a shy girl who came to the stage door night after night, sponsored her career and won her an understudy role, then was undercut by her; the episode became the basis for Mary Orr's "The Wisdom of Eve," adapted into All About Eve (1950).
- Filming ran from April to June 1945 and was briefly halted so Humphrey Bogart could take a honeymoon; he had married Lauren Bacall on May 21, midway through production.
- Producer Mark Hellinger decreed Humphrey Bogart would wear no painter's outfits that looked unmasculine, so when a smock and tasseled beret turned up on his wardrobe rack Bogart was furious, until he learned Barbara Stanwyck had planted it as a joke.
- After the song "Open the Door, Richard" became a hit in five versions released in 1946 and 1947, Warners reportedly considered cutting or refilming the scene where Humphrey Bogart pounds on Barbara Stanwyck's bedroom door demanding she open it, but left it unchanged.
- Warner Bros. paid $225,000 for the film rights in the summer of 1944 and announced Bette Davis as Sally Carroll, with Jesse L. Lasky producing, before a screenwriter had even been assigned to the project.
