Plot summary
Cheryl Draper looks out her bedroom window one night and sees a woman being strangled in the apartment across the way. By the time detectives reach the building, Albert Richter has moved the body, so the police find nothing and decide Cheryl imagined the whole thing. The next day, while Richter is away, Cheryl tours the vacant apartment on his floor and takes a pair of earrings she finds there. Richter sees her drive off with them and phones the police ahead of her, and Cheryl is accused of robbery. At the station he declines to press charges, but Lt. Lawrence Mathews, a police officer who studies law at night school, is left suspicious.
