Plot summary
Jessica Drummond, an upper-class widow in Lake Forest, is grieving the husband she lost after a long illness. Frank Everett, the lawyer who handled the estate and had long been a friend of the family, shows interest in dating her. Her two sons, Keith and Kim, are still at home. Her friends remind her too much of her husband, and George Van Orman, an old friend, presses his attentions on her until she rejects him. She joins Ginna and Cary Abbott on a vacation at Lake Tahoe, where a broken ski leaves her lost until Major Scott Landis helps her back to the Abbotts' lodge. She spurns his romantic advances at first. Back home, a friend of her mother's sees her enter his apartment, and gossip spreads through her circle and their children.
