Plot summary

Lulu Smith works at a library and has not once been late in eight years. One morning she is late, and loneliness pushes her to take out her life savings and buy a ticket for a two-week cruise to Havana. On the crossing she meets Bob Grover, a lawyer who mistakes her cabin for his own. They have dinner and are soon drawn to each other. In Havana they gamble, ride horses and walk the beach. Bob asks what brought her, and Lulu answers that she came to meet him.
