Plot summary
Jessie Bourne, a New York socialite, lives on Gracie Square with her husband Brandon and suspects him of infidelity. Years earlier, his affair with the party girl Isabel Lorrison nearly ended their marriage, and now Isabel is back in town, escorted around by the short-tempered Alec Dawning. When Dawning finds Isabel with Brandon outside a nightclub, he punches him, and a tabloid photographer catches the blow for the front page. Jessie meets Mark Dwyer, an ex-policeman and Army intelligence officer just back from Italy who grew up in the same West Side neighborhood she did. The two are drawn to each other, though their friendship stays platonic.
