Plot summary
Susan Wilcox was raped at thirteen, stopped speaking for two years, and was placed in a Swiss sanatorium. She comes home for the first time, to the house where her mother, Miriam, lives with Harold Jennings, an alcoholic. Susan walks back into the woods where the attack happened, and someone follows her there. At night she sees a shape at her window and finds a dead man in her bathtub; when she comes to, there is no trace of a body. Miriam believes her daughter is hallucinating and doubts that the sanatorium should have released her. Susan asks John, the family gardener, and Dr. Michael Lomas for help.
