Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Clash by Night (1952)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The screenwriter Odets, named by Elia Kazan before the House Un-American Activities Committee shortly before the film's release, kept his screen credit: RKO owner Howard Hughes feared a legal battle over a contract signed two years earlier would delay the release.
- Joan Crawford was originally scheduled to play the female lead under a contract giving her five percent of the film's gross, an unprecedented figure, but she had to withdraw because of her commitments to This Woman Is Dangerous and Sudden Fear.
- During production, the famous nude calendar photos of Monroe surfaced and reporters hounded her, creating considerable distraction for the filmmakers.
- Barbara Stanwyck and the film's other stars lobbied for Marilyn Monroe, cast as Peggy, to receive star billing, and the film is Monroe's first with her name before the title.
- Ryan was cast in December 1950 after renewing a contract with RKO, but in an unspecified role; the producers also sought Richard Carlson, Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift and Charlton Heston for the male lead, and the search delayed production.
- Fritz Lang changed the setting of the play from Staten Island to a California fishing town, and to satisfy the demands of the Production Code the play's tragic ending was changed.
