Virginia Brissac
Biography
Virginia Brissac was an American stage actress who headlined stock companies along the West Coast in the early 1900s, from Vancouver to San Diego. Born in San Jose and raised in San Francisco, she was introduced to the theater by her aunt and uncle. Reginald Travers, a Bay Area stage actor, gave her elocution lessons and helped launch her career; by 1902 she was starring in San Francisco productions, and she later played ingenue and leading roles in comedies and dramas. She moved into film as a character actress, often cast as mothers, grandmothers, and confidantes. She appeared in more than 155 films. Her credits included The Little Foxes (1941), Dark Victory (1939), Captain from Castile (1947), Operation Pacific (1951), and Executive Suite (1954). She was probably best remembered as the grandmother of Jim Stark in Rebel Without a Cause (1955). She also appeared on television series such as Dragnet, I Love Lucy, and The Lone Wolf.
