Plot summary
Ruth Bennett leaves her job as a government secretary and moves into an old house she has inherited in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in the Amish country. Her niece, Sara Dunning, comes to live there with her. The house dates from the Revolutionary era, and its original inhabitants are said to linger: General Douglas Campbell, who was suspected of involvement with the British, and his daughter Amanda, called Ammie, who disappeared after eloping with Anthony. Their neighbor is Pat McDougal, a local professor, whose student Stan is among the guests when someone proposes holding a séance in the house. The medium Sylvia Wall arrives for it.
