Plot summary
Clifford Groves, a toy manufacturer in Pasadena, lives a routine life. His wife Marion and their three adolescent children, Vinnie, Ellen and Frankie, pay him little attention. One night, alone at home, he receives a surprise visit from Norma Miller, who worked for him twenty years earlier. They go to the theater using the seats he had bought for himself and Marion, and then sit up talking in his office. Norma is a divorced dress designer, in the area to address a conference at the nearby resort of Palm Valley. Before she flies back to New York, the two arrange to meet again. When Frankie sprains her ankle, Marion urges Cliff to make a weekend business trip to Palm Valley alone, and there he comes across Norma.
