Plot summary
Karen Duncan plays the piano for a living, and a lung condition has brought her to a sanatorium in Switzerland, where Dr. Tony Stanton directs her treatment and she bristles at his severity. He tells her that complete rest is the only thing standing between her and a fatal outcome. Against his instructions, she and a fellow patient, Celestine Miller, spend a day off the grounds and an evening out. Karen meets Paul Clermont, an auto racer, who invites her to Monte Carlo. She is drawn to Tony, but he seems to care only about her health, so she accepts and gambles, smokes and drinks.
