Plot summary
In the 1870s New Mexico Territory, T. C. Jeffords rules a cattle spread called the Furies, and his daughter Vance has a stake in the estate in mind. She wants a husband who can run the ranch with her once her father is gone, and she sets her hopes on Rip Darrow, who keeps a saloon in town and believes part of the Furies' land belongs to him. Rip holds a grudge against T. C., who pays him fifty thousand dollars to stay out of Vance's life. T. C. then brings Flo Burnett to the ranch, a woman set on marrying him for money. Flo and T. C. inform Vance that an outsider will manage the Furies and that the Herrera family, who squat on the property, will be forced off it.
