Plot summary
Elizabeth Lane writes the Diary of a Housewife column for Smart Housekeeping, telling readers about a Connecticut farm, a devoted husband and a new baby. Off the page she is unmarried, lives in a small New York apartment, cannot cook, and gets her recipes from Felix Bassenak, a chef with a restaurant. The publisher, Alexander Yardley, knows nothing of the charade, so when Jefferson Jones's nurse writes asking that the rescued sailor spend Christmas with Elizabeth and her family, he orders it and invites himself along. Elizabeth's editor Dudley Beecham knows the truth, and John Sloan, an architect who has been courting her, owns a farm in Connecticut. Felix cooks out of sight and a neighbor's baby is borrowed.
