Plot summary
Wealthy expatriate Richard Sturges buys a third-class ticket for the Titanic's first crossing, and once aboard he finds his wife Julia and their two children, eighteen-year-old Annette and thirteen-year-old Norman. Julia intends to settle in her hometown of Mackinac Island, Michigan, and raise them as ordinary Americans. When Annette learns of her mother's intention, she wants to return to Europe with her father; Julia agrees that Annette is old enough to decide for herself but will not give up Norman. Fellow passengers include the wealthy Maude Young, the social climber Earl Meeker, the college tennis player Giff Rogers, who is taken with Annette, and George Healey, a priest defrocked for alcoholism.

- Fox studio head Darryl F. Zanuck ordered the film for Clifton Webb, telling writers Walter Reisch and Charles Brackett to give Webb a new career as a character actor and not to make him a clown. Reisch then proposed the Titanic idea and pitched Webb as one of the 25 multimillionaires who died in the sinking.
- Some historical figures in the film are given fictitious names: Maude Young is based on real Titanic survivor Margaret Brown, and Sanderson, the company representative, appears to be based on J. Bruce Ismay, though he does not accompany the voyage.
- A September 1952 news article reported that Terry Moore was set to play Annette Sturges in the film if she could finish production of Man on a Tightrope on time.
- The film was Twentieth Century-Fox's first about Titanic; the studio later released the 1997 film of the same title internationally, while Paramount Pictures handled North American distribution.
